Pistachio nuts improves erections

A Turkish study showed significant improvement in erections after consumption of pistachio nuts.

Details of the study

A total of 17 married male patients with ED for at least 12 months were included in this prospective study. Patients were put on a 100 g pistachio nuts diet for 3 weeks. IIEF and PCDU were evaluated before and after the pistachio diet. In addition, plasma total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride were measured before and after dietary modifications from all subjects.

Prospective study – is a cohort study that follows over time a group of similar individuals (cohorts) who differ with respect to certain factors under study, to determine how these factors affect rates of a certain outcome.

IIEF – The International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) is a widely used, multi-dimensional self-report instrument for the evaluation of male sexual function.

PCDU – Penile Doppler Ultrasound (PCDU) is an ultrasound  not too different from what pregnant woman use on their expanded bellies to assess the health and sex of their fetus. In this case,  PCDU assess’ the health of circulation (vascularature) of the penis.

LDL – “bad cholesterol”

HDL – “good cholesterol”

Triglycerides (TC) – fat in the blood


Conclusion of the study

3-week pistachio diet applied to patients with ED resulted in a significant improvement in erectile function parameters (PCDU parameters and IIEF scores) with additional improvement in serum lipid parameters (LDL and TC decreased, HDL increased) without any side effects.

My take on this

This is a small non-randomized study that reflects the fact that a trial with more participants is needed to conclude that pistachio nuts have any effect on ED or serum lipids. This is not the first time, however, that pistachio nuts have shown beneficial effects on serum lipids (Colin et al, 2008). Pistachios are healthy, filled with almost all minerals, good amount of fiber and healthy fats. They may also curb hunger – reference, Although pistachio nuts effect on ED is not conclusive, it is compelling. So men EAT UP!
