What do I mean by that?
Well, I don’t know if you’ve noticed it. Hopefully you have, because that means you’re paying really close attention to the podcast. I took a week off and the reason why I took a week off is because I needed to reset what happened. Exactly. Well much like you, I have a lot on my plate, right? A big part of what I’m trying to do with this podcast is yep.
I do the research. Yep. I absolutely see hundreds of patients a year in my clinic, but I’m also a regular man, just like you with children and a job and aspirations and goals and trying to support my family and trying to stay fit and all these things. So I want to share with you all of it. I want to share with you my experiences, my research, so that you can really utilize it tomorrow.
In fact, you could utilize it right now and live better with age, right? That’s the goal. So what I noticed was that I was getting stuck with, what do I need to talk about in my next podcast? And meanwhile, I can talk about. This type of material to the cows come home. I couldn’t talk about this either. This is what I do.
This is what I love is my passion, but I saw myself that I got a little bit stuck and that was because I probably was a little overwhelmed and so forth. So one of the things that I’ve noticed that helps a lot is the following once a quarter, right? So once every three months you want to take a step back for a day or two and not continue with the ground.
Take a step back and kind of evaluate your situation, evaluate your life. Am I doing the thing that I love to do? Or am I just doing it to make money for me? Thank God. If I hit the lottery tomorrow, I’ll be back to work on Monday. I just love what I do. I love helping people and I love receiving all the amazing accolades and responses from people of how I’m hopefully.
So you want that life. You want a life where not only are you okay with Monday mornings, but you can’t wait for Monday morning. Right. But in order to do that, you really need to take a step back and say, you know, how am I feeling? Am I feeling stressed? Am I feeling like overwhelmed? And you know, is what I do congruent with my beliefs and my values.
Because sometimes we just go in one way and you just keep going harder and you just go even harder and harder after that. And you forgot why you’re doing what you’re doing. So this is something you could do again, every three months. Take two days off from everything, including family. And that’s even harder as a dad with a young boy and teenage girls.
And I’m a soccer dad. I’m a baseball that that’s really difficult, but I think it’s very important to take some time off, even from. And thank God in my community. You know, we carpool. So I’m friends with all the dads and I can say, listen, do you mind taking, you know, Leo to the baseball games we got, I have work to do, and everybody cooperates.
So you want to make friends with the soccer dads and the baseball dads and the whatever else that, and you work together. And then you’re going to have to pay them back and forth, which is perfectly fine. But the point is take some time off. Reevaluate what you’re doing. So what are the things that you want to focus on and what are the things that you want to value?
You want to evaluate several things you want to evaluate your work? Are you just chasing money or you really feel like you have purpose with your work? Look, I work closely with a lot of finance people here in New York city and wall street. Great people. These are great guys sometimes however they know, and I know that they’re just chasing money and what happens with.
Well then how do they typically manage stress through exercise? No. Do they know? They go to bars and the over drink and they just have an unhealthy lifestyle. Then they have problems at home. And by the way, some of these finance and wall street guys do a great job, making a lot of money, but also living a healthy life.
So some of them crack the code already and they do a great job, but I find that most of them are so struggling. Right. Figure out and reevaluate your work. The other part is your relationships with your self first and foremost, with your spouse, with your children, with your mother, as she still around, hopefully with your family members, friends, looking at.
And you know what I like to do. I like to give it a rating system where I rate myself and my doing a good job as a dad. And it’s on a scale of one to 10. Am I doing a good job with each one of my three kids in a scale of one to 10? You don’t have to be perfect. In fact, I’m never a 10 out of 10 with all my three kids.
If I’m honest with myself, I’m not, you know, at any given time, one gets most of the attention. The other two don’t. I acknowledge that. So then I can make adjustments with your wife, right? Very important that you want good kids. And we’re going to talk about for father’s day, I’m going to have something father’s day, week, something special about father’s day, but what good kids have a good relationship with your, with your spouse then is you want to look at your money situation, your finances are you earning what you need to earn?
What are you doing with that money? Are you spending more? And if you can afford that, you know, nice Ferrari go for it, man. You deserve it. You probably work really hard, but what if you get in and it’s not the right thing to get at this time because you have three kids in college. I don’t know. You have to look into that.
And sometimes we are impulsive just like anyone else. Sometimes we think our spouses are impulsive. We are too. We are too. So take a look at that investments. And so. The other thing you want to look at is your hobbies. Well, why are we talking about hobbies? I don’t have time for hobbies. You probably do.
Not only do you have time for hobbies, but you probably have a hobby that you don’t even know. It’s a hobby, right? So you’re probably, I don’t know, into researching things on the internet, you spend a lot of time on the internet, probably more time than you should. Spending more time on things that you don’t really care about.
This is why you need to reset because you need to look into that and you need to take an honest look and your behavior. Lastly, your health, the health is first. You need to checklists from top to bottom, you know, head a mental health eyesight, literally from top to bottom dental health. Do you know that if you have bleeding gums and you have periodontal disease, that’s associated with heart disease and even erect, I’ll just find.
So if you have unhealthy gums that could lead to other unhealthy. All right. So you want to look into that? I just actually came as we speak. I’m surprised I can talk. I just came back from the dental office and from my mouth is a little bit numb still, but you want to look into these things, then your thyroid, your neck, and your heart and your joints.
You know, you rate it on a scale of one to 10. Do you need to make an appointment with a cardiologist, with a urologist as you keep working your way down? Are you paying too much? Are you getting up to pee three to five times? Because that leads to further health problems. Why? Because you’re not sleeping.
In fact nocturia, which is the medical term for getting up at night to urinate. Nocturia is associated with multiple other conditions. And after a certain age, seventies, eighties, you get up a lot of night. You’re at risk of falling fracturing. Which hope it won’t happen because of course you exercise and you do weight resistance training, right.
But the risk increases significantly when you are getting up at night in a dark environment and so forth, many deaths actually happened that way. So you want to take a look at that, your feet health, your feet health. One of the things that I can’t believe is most ignored you’re on your feet all the time.
Do you have the right shoes? I find that a lot of my patients are actually wearing shoes that tightens up their foot and uncomfortable, but you know, they have to present with a certain look, I guess, for work or something. So you want to have the right shoes that fit your foot properly. Very important.
Your knees do, they hurt if they do scale of one to 10, when you wake up every morning, how stiff are you? Well, Dr. Geo, of course I’m stiff. I’m 64 years. No, no, no, no. You cannot accept that. You cannot accept that you cannot accept aging and you cannot accept the illnesses and conditions that come along with aging that you see with friends and family.
You need to take a step back and evaluate reset. Am I living a good life? Am I overly stressed? Well, there’s a difference between stress. And distress and words matter. I keep telling my children words matter. Do you really mean what you say? Words matter? We overuse the word stress. Meanwhile, stress is an important thing because if right now there’s a gunman coming into this building where I’m recording from.
I want to be stressed, right? Because what happens? Blood pressure goes up. Thank God blood pressure goes up. Cause blood pressure should go up and that’s. Right. My heart beats faster as it should. I cannot digest food. I don’t want to digest food. Right. I can see more clearly where I’m going. You want to see more clearly where you’re going.
You want to react, right? So those are chemicals in your body that are produced to protect you. These chemicals, that people, oh, we don’t want too much epinephrine and norepinephrine and adrenaline because it’s bad cortisol. There is no such thing as good as. You need a lot of cortisol because cortisol raises your blood sugar and blood sugar goes into your muscles so that you can run, you can fight or flight, right.
Fight or flee. So you need more cortisol. You need more adrenaline, you need your blood pressure to go up in certain scenarios. The problem of course is when your body just doesn’t know the difference that there is no gunmen coming into the building, right? There is no. But your body doesn’t know how to interpret that.
So in your body, in most bodies, I saw a patient yesterday, stressed out of his mind, not sleeping, dealing with a state issues with his family and blah, blah, blah, right. Health concerns. He’s always producing cortisol all day too much. He’s always producing adrenaline and norepinephrine, all these chemicals that are good only when necessary, but harmful when it’s.
You need to evaluate that, right? Because your blood pressure should not be too high all day. It should be higher when you need it to be when you’re moving fast or you’re in a situation. Look even sometimes in a situation where you have an important meeting with a business partner or client. All right.
That’s normal to be a little bit more, but how do you manage that? There’s many ways and you go on the internet, you’re going to have 10,000 pages of what to do, so it could be overwhelming. But the one thing I’ll tell you right now, I’ll give you a quick bio hack. Should I say a term that’s now used all over the place?
How do I hack my body? All right. So here’s a hack. There’s many things to do to manage stress. And remember what I’m saying? It’s not just managing stress is managing the chemicals that are produced in the body. That when in excess are harmful for you. Okay. So what’s a quick way to manage stress. And as a new Yorker, as a new Yorker, we don’t have a lot of time to go to the mountains and meditate for three hours a day.
So like, give me the quick one. What gives me the most bang for my buck? Right? That’s what we want. What gives me the most bang for my buck? All right. Here it is. As it relates to stress is deep diaphragmatic. When you look at all these meditative techniques and you look at what they all have in common cheek, gong, transcendental meditation, certain types of yoga, regular meditation, one thing in common, deep diaphragmatic breathing, deep diaphragmatic breathing, and it works.
And it works instantaneously because you have two types of nervous system. You have. Speed. Let me press on the pedal nervous system, which is called the autonomic nervous system. And then you have the peripheral nervous system, which is I’m sorry. I got those that’s different parasympathetic.
Parasympathetic is the let’s slow down. Let’s press the brakes. Sympathetic is less pressed the pedal. So you have these two constantly going. If you have too much sympathetic and not enough parasympathetic where you press the brakes, then. Your body will not handle that well. And all kinds of conditions and diseases come from that, including cancer, by the way.
So what do you do? Deep diaphragmatic breathing. When you take deep diaphragmatic breaths, you stimulate the parasympathetic nervous system, right? And that’s what you want. You don’t have to worry about stimulating the sympathetic nervous system too much, because you can do that. Most people can. And sometimes again you need to, but you want to simply stimulate the parasympathetic nervous.
Let’s bring it home here as we wrap it up. And by the way, today is, are we, I think we in June now we are, and it’s men’s health month. So happy men’s health month to you, and let’s bring it home reset once a quarter, take some time and reevaluate your life, your behavior, and figure out if your behavior is in congruent with your values.
You also want to evaluate your health. Right from top to bottom, literally, and start making appointments with whoever you need to make an appointment with. And I would include a functional medicine or naturopathic doctor in that, because I think there’s a lot of value there. I may be a little biased, but functional medicine and naturopathic doctors build hell.
They’re not just looking to bring down disease or treat disease, but they build health the way. Avoid disease and dying prematurely is by building your health and building your body and such doctors help with that. So make appointments with whoever you need to make an appointment with reevaluate, your finances make moves accordingly, but the bottom line is you’re taking a step back.
You’re taking some deep breaths and you’re saying to yourself, When I’m done with my reset, you know, for example, in my reset, I said, look, I need a moment though. I love podcasting now. And I love sharing amazing information that I know it will help people. I need to take a step back so I can really reach my purpose and my goal with it and not just get on the mic and talk jibberish.
Right? Do that once a quarter, right. Once every three months. And then make sure you follow through with whatever it is that you’re saying you’re going to do. Am I exercising enough? Am I sleeping enough? Look at your sleep. How’s my diet. Am I eating too much? So there’s two things with diet, right? Am I eating too much?
And when I’m eating, what am I eating? Right supplements. And my consistent with the supplements and nutraceuticals that I know will help me. That’s all part of the reset. And remember, stress is important in the stress. Chemicals are important. When it’s chronic and it’s constant and you don’t sleep and you don’t digest because those are the symptoms from stress, gastric reflux syndrome, where you have acidity come up every time you eat that stress, that’s not because you ate a steak, right?
That’s stress stress-related. So you gotta be aware of these symptoms. You’re not sleeping. Well, you have low libido. You have erectile dysfunction, oftentimes records. His function could be due to many things. Oftentimes due to. Uh, no vitality. Right? So these are some of many symptoms that are related to stress.
Deep diaphragmatic breathing is a quick one. It helps take four or five deep breaths and you’ll do well. Okay. So. Happy men’s health month. I really hope you enjoyed this podcast. I’m sure you will. And take action right away. Implementation is what it’s all about. This is Dr. Geo signing off. I’ll talk to you next time.
